Own-brand skincare: how to prepare a cream manufacturing brief
How to describe the texture, fragrance, format and packaging of a cream or lotion in a clear brief for own-brand manufacturing.

Launching a cream starts with the intended user and how they will use it, rather than a list of fashionable ingredients. A hand cream in a gift set, a body product for a spa and a lotion in a hotel room may need different textures, fragrances and containers. A clear use case makes discussions about the formula and samples more useful.
Start with one clearly defined product
Identify the application area, audience and sales channel. Instead of asking for a whole skincare range, describe the first item: a hand cream in a compact tube for a gift shop, for example. If you plan several products, decide what should connect them: fragrance, design or the feel after application. You do not have to launch every item at once.
Describe texture through specific characteristics
“A light cream” can mean different things to different people. Explain how the product should spread, how quickly you want it to feel absorbed and the finish you prefer. For a lotion, describe the desired fluidity too. If you have a reference product, explain which particular characteristic matters, rather than providing its name alone.
- The feel during and after application.
- Fragrance preferences, including whether you want no fragrance.
- Desired ingredients and restrictions to discuss.
- Texture references and characteristics you would like to avoid.
These preferences are starting points for development, not a finished formula. Describing a desired effect does not establish which claims can be made about the final product.
Consider formula and packaging together
Specify your preferred volume and whether you envisage a tube, jar or pump bottle. Discuss how the customer will open, dispense and carry the product. A container photograph is a useful reference, but the final choice should be agreed alongside the product and available components. If an outer box is needed, describe its design separately in the box design brief.
Prepare a short sample review checklist
Compare a sample against the original brief: texture, fragrance, ease of dispensing and the feel after application. Record feedback against each point instead of simply saying you like or dislike it. If the concept changes, reflect that in the revised brief.
Before making an enquiry, also prepare an estimated batch quantity, target budget, preferred launch date and intended sales market. Exact quantities, costs and timing are agreed after the product and packaging requirements have been clarified.
Explore cream and skincare manufacturing to identify the format you need. Once your initial requirements are ready, complete the manufacturing brief and attach references. This will give NADEL a clear starting point for discussing your product.
